Chapter 08 · Reddit Launch Guide

Building Karma the Right Way

Most subreddits worth posting in gate submissions behind a minimum karma threshold, enforced by AutoMod. Starting from zero, here's the fastest legitimate path.

Comments beat posts for a new account

Comment karma is lower-risk and faster to accumulate than post karma. A bad post can get removed entirely; a mediocre comment usually just sits unvoted. You can also leave far more comments per day than posts without looking spammy.

  • Target threads 1–3 hours old — enough visibility, not yet buried.
  • Add something specific — a real detail, correction, or experience. Generic agreement rarely gets upvoted.
  • Spread activity across a few large, high-traffic subreddits (r/AskReddit-tier communities) before moving to the niche subs you actually care about.

The 9:1 rule

Many subreddits informally or explicitly expect roughly nine non-promotional contributions for every one promotional post. Skip this and even a well-written post reads as a drive-by.

What gets accounts shadowbanned

  • Karma-farming bots or paid karma services.
  • Vote manipulation.
  • Cross-posting identical content across many subreddits in a short window.

A shadowban is silent — your account looks completely normal to you but is invisible to everyone else. Check for one by viewing your profile in a logged-out, private browser window.
