Chapter 05 · Reddit Launch Guide
Reddit Ads

- Ad Formats: Promoted Posts (appear in users' feeds), Display Ads, and Sponsored AMAs.
- Placements: Ads can appear on specific subreddits or site-wide.
- Targeting Options: Demographics, interests, community targeting, location.
Reddit ads can be a good strategy to promote your product, but it’s not recommended until you find your Product Market fit. Most of the time the products promoted on Reddit are picked up by Twitter & LinkedIn influencers who then talk about it for free. But your product needs to have some cool element to it
When Reddit Ads actually make sense
Run ads only after two things are true: you have product-market fit (organic users already convert and stick), and you have at least one organic Reddit post that performed well. Reddit Ads amplify a message that already resonates — they don't manufacture one. Spending before that is how budgets disappear.
How to structure a first campaign
- Promote a proven organic post rather than writing a fresh "ad." The whole advantage of Reddit Ads is that they can look and read like a native post — use that.
- Start with one or two tightly relevant subreddits, not broad interest targeting. Community targeting is Reddit's real edge over other ad platforms.
- Set a small daily budget and let it run long enough to gather signal before judging it — a day or two of data tells you almost nothing.
- Watch cost per click and, more importantly, what happens after the click — a cheap click that bounces is worse than an expensive one that signs up.
What good Reddit creative looks like
The best-performing Reddit ads don't look like ads. They read like a redditor sharing something, use a real screenshot or a plain honest headline instead of stock polish, and often win because the comments are enabled and the brand shows up to answer. Turning comments off signals "ad" and kills trust.
